Nestlé has worked with the Rainforest Alliance since the Nestle Cocoa Plan was established. Our collaboration has gone beyond certification, and we currently partner on forest protection and the innovative income accelerator program. We also source all our certified cocoa from Rainforest Alliance-certified farms, helping to create a more sustainable cocoa supply chain and tackle social and environmental issues.
The International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) is a Swiss-based, non-profit foundation that works to ensure a better future for children in cocoa-growing communities. In 2012, Nestlé worked with the ICI to develop the Child Labor Monitoring and Remediation System (CLMRS) – now an industry standard. This tool helps identify children at risk of child labor, raising awareness and helping them and their families where we find issues.
Netherlands-based KIT Royal Tropical Institute is an independent centre of expertise and education dedicated to sustainable development. They oversee measuring and evaluating the innovative income accelerator program to help us have a better understanding of its impact and allow us to learn and adapt along the way.
The Jacobs Foundation is one of the world’s leading organizations dedicated to improving the positive development of children and youth. With their help, we are working to improve schooling in Côte d’Ivoire and extending the chance for more children to have a formal education through The Child Learning and Education Facility (CLEF), a coalition of organisations dedicated to boosting educational outcomes in rural communities in Côte d'Ivoire. By 2030, CLEF aims to provide schooling to 5-million children.
Earthworm Foundation is a non-profit organisation driven by the desire to positively impact the relationship between people and nature. They partner with businesses, civil society, communities, and governments to reduce the impact of raw materials on people and the planet. Their supply chain, social and environmental experts work across the five continents to improve conditions for people, forests and soils impacted by production of cocoa, packaging, palm oil, rubber and more.
In 2020, they initiated a unique collaboration around the Cavally Forest Reserve, one of the 234 classified forests of Côte d’Ivoire with the Ivorian government and Nestlé. In 2023, the Cavally Forest regeneration project welcomed new partners to achieve greater impact: the Swiss Federal Administration (SECO) via the Swiss Platform for Sustainable Cocoa (SWISSCO) as well as companies Touton and Cocoasource, who work directly with cocoa and rubber cooperatives in the area.
IDH puts people, planet, and progress at the heart of trade by leveraging the power of markets to create better jobs, better incomes, a better environment, and gender equality for all. It helps companies and governments reach these goals by facilitating cooperation, innovating scalable solutions, and embedding these practices into the market. We are collaborating with IDH on numerous projects including the innovative income accelerator program where IDH convenes the Strategic Advisory Committee to the program to collect external stakeholder views on the progress of the program and discuss challenges in, and solutions for, its implementation.
