Adissa and Emmanuella’s story:

Building bridge schools

Adissa and Emmanuella both live in the same village in Côte d’Ivoire. In 2018 neither were going to school – and never had done.

Through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan’s Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation System, we discovered that Adissa was not attending school. Her parents simply couldn’t afford to send her. Neither was her friend Emmanuella, who was not at school for the same reason.

Both girls were offered a place at a bridge school. Built by the Nestlé Cocoa Plan alongside the Jacobs Foundation, these are designed to help children like Adissa and Emmanuella catch up on missed schooling. The girls excelled there, and when we met them again in 2019, they had already successfully entered mainstream education.

How have they gotten on since then? How successful has the bridging course been in preparing them for school life?
